About Us

I'm Afnan, the person behind Stonechemy.

Stonechemy started on the trail, not in a workshop. Hiking through Australia's backcountry, I kept noticing the same thing the ground here is known for: colour, where you least expect it. That curiosity led me to opal cutting and once I started shaping rough stone into something that held light the way these landscapes do, I was hooked.

Based in Surry Hills, Sydney, I now hand-cut and polish every stone we sell. I work with boulder opal, fossilised wood and much more1

The name is a small nod to alchemy: turning raw stone into something worth holding onto, without changing what it actually is.

Every stone I sell is loose. No settings, no jewellery — just the stone, ready for whoever wants to build something around it, or simply keep it as it is.
